A Governing Body is accountable for the extended services provided by the school, under the Education Act 2002. The Act gives governing bodies the specific power to provide facilities and services that 'further any charitable purpose for the benefit of pupils at the school, their families and the people who live and work in the locality in which the school is situated.'
Governing bodies cannot provide any service that might interfere with their main duty to educate pupils or their responsibility to promote high standards of educational achievement at the school.
There are a number of key responsibilities that a Governing Body, as a minimum should ensure they are aware of when planning to provide access to extended services. These include:
